A HEART FOR HYDROCEPHALUS and Giveaway

It's time for another cause that is near and dear to my heart. I love my family like crazy - they are, every one of them, amazing people. And my sweet cousin has a precious son with hydrocephalus (also known as water-on-the-brain). Here is what his parents have to say about Johnny and the foundation he is starting:

A HEART FOR HYDROCEPHALUS ASSOCIATION is a group of people who wish to raise awareness about the condition of Hydrocephalus and support research and the community of people affected by it.

It has been formed in honor of our beloved son, Johnathan, who bravely lives with hydrocephalus and has had multiple life-saving surgeries because of it. Seven in the last 18 months! He has a heart for all children who are sick and suffering and wishes to help them and the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh that cares for them. To celebrate his 7th birthday this October, we are starting this association. We hope it will be a blessing to our community and especially all those who have children that live with chronic illness. The association will donate funds collected to the neurosurgery department of Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh (one of the only places in the whole country doing hydrocephalus research!) and as grants to families needing support as they deal with this and other chronic illnesses. Friday: Help Find a Cure for Lukemia

I recently came across the blog Big Bear's Wife as she was having a giveaway to raise money for the Light the Night Charity Walk. This charity raises money for Lukemia research. If you'd like to help out, here are the details:

Every year my family and I along with a few friends, walk in the local Light the Nigh Charity Walk for the Lukemia and Lymphoma society.

We started walking with Light the Night in memory of Robin Mantilia-Timmes (Nicole's mother - Nicole is one of my best friends) in 2009 and in 2010 added Joe Hill to the list and walked in honor of Joe Hill (a family friend, 13 years old) as well.

This year we are walking in honor of both Joe Hill and Robin Mantilia-Timmes.

On these nights, thousands of participants carrying illuminated balloons, walk and raise funds for vital, lifesaving research and patient services.

We are fighting for a cure for Lukemia. We are walking for a cure for lukemia. Help support us!

Friday: Aid For Africa

I know that the Friday slot is supposed to go to Deals and Giveaways, but I thought this was much more important.

I have become grumpy since having kids. If I really sit down and think about it, I'm pretty horrified at the number of days I think to myself "Man, this parenting thing is really hard!" Frankly, I don't know what 'really hard' is. Most Americans don't. To me, 'really hard' has always meant cranky kids, a messy house, a sleepless night, failing at my attempt to keep up with Joneses as they say.

And then, today, this article has been circulating the internet. It describes in horrifying ways the choices some parents in famine-ravishes areas of Africa are having to make. The choice of which child lives, and which dies. These families are having to travel long distances on foot with little food or water while watching their children grow weak and succumb to exhaustion and starvation. They have to face the agonizing decision of who receives their limited supply of life-giving water and who is simply too weak. As a parent I cannot even begin to imagine having to make such a choice. As an American, I praise my Lord that I will likely never have to make the choice. And as a human I'm asking myself how and where I can give to help these people.

I know I can't just run on down there with a bus full of food and water, but the article does provide this link with 45 organizations currently accepting donations for the aid of these people. We have so much. They have so little. I'm just hoping that we can do something to help one fewer parent have to make such a terrible decision.
